If your ITR refund hasn't arrived yet, simply waiting won't suffice. You need to understand the reason why it hasn't arrived yet.

The deadline for filing income tax returns, September 16th, has passed, but a large number of taxpayers are still waiting for their refunds. Many are checking their bank accounts daily, but they haven't received a refund credit message. If this is happening to you, simply waiting won't suffice. You need to understand the reason why your ITR refund hasn't arrived yet. So, let us tell you today what mistakes you might be making if your ITR refund hasn't arrived yet.

Refunds may be under investigation.

Refunds are typically issued within a few weeks of return filing and verification. This time, many taxpayers have received their refunds, but those whose refunds haven't yet arrived may be under investigation. CBDT Chief Ravi Agarwal recently stated that the system has red-flagged cases involving high-value refunds and suspicious claims. These returns are being thoroughly investigated, which is why the refund process appears to be slow. However, refunds involving smaller amounts are being issued without delay. Ravi Agarwal stated that normal refunds will be cleared by December, but your return should be free of errors.

The biggest reasons for delayed ITR refunds

In fact, in most cases, the reason for non-receipt of refunds is not technical errors, but rather errors made during filing.

Incorrect bank details - If you made a mistake in the account number or IFSC code while filing your ITR, your ITR refund may be delayed.

Name mismatch - If there's a name mismatch between your PAN card and bank account, your refund may be delayed.
Bank account not pre-validated - ITR refunds are only credited to bank accounts that are pre-validated on the portal. If your account is not pre-validated, your refund may be delayed.

PAN not linked to Aadhaar - If your PAN card is not linked to Aadhaar, your ITR refund may be delayed.

Incorrect claims - If you have made a mistake in tax calculations or claimed deductions that are not valid, the department may withhold your refund and investigate.
