EPF Interest: Employees working in private jobs have an Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account, into which they deposit 12% of their basic salary every month. In addition, the interest earned is tax-free (up to a certain limit), and the maturity amount is also tax-free (subject to certain conditions).
The government also deposits interest into your EPF account annually. But if you lose your job and there are no further contributions to your EPF account, will you still receive interest on your EPF (EPF Interest)? Let's find out the answer to this question.
Do you get interest on your PF after losing your job?
When you leave your job or lose your job, you continue to receive interest on your PF account for a certain period. After that period, your account becomes "inoperative." This means you will continue to receive interest from the government on your PF money for a limited time.
How long do you get interest on your PF after losing your job?
According to EPFO rules, you receive interest on your EPF for 3 years after leaving your job, after which the account becomes "inoperative," and interest stops accruing. This means that if you have left your job or lost your job and haven't found a new one, you will receive interest on the money in your PF account for 3 years. After 3 years, you will no longer receive interest.
Let's understand this with an example. Suppose a person stops working at the age of 40. They made their last contribution to their EPF account in July 2025. The EPF account will remain active until July 2028. Interest will be paid on it for 3 years. After that, the account will become inactive.
How to check your PF account balance?
You can check your PF account balance through the UMANG app or via SMS. To check your balance through UMANG, first open the app, click on EPFO. Click on Employee Centric Services, then click on the View Passbook option. Enter your UAN number and password. You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Now you can check your EPF balance.
In addition to using your mobile number, members registered on the UAN portal can get their PF details by sending an SMS from their registered mobile number. To do this, you need to send an SMS with the text ‘EPFOHO UAN’ to 7738299899.
