People in southern Vietnam use an unusual technique to trap fish by digging ground pits when the cold northerly winds set in and fish start migrating.

Digging ground pits emerged as an improvised fishing method before modern tools became common. Fishermen would place jars and pots or dig a circular hole about 30 centimeters wide and 50 centimeters deep along pathways where water from rice fields flows into canals, then cover the rim with a layer of soft mud.

Jars and pots must also be fixed in place with wooden stakes. Once the trap is set up, it is camouflaged with coconut leaves and left for fish to approach. As temperatures drop late at night, fish follow the smell of mud and moisture as they move toward the canal but eventually fall into the pit.
