GOLD SILVER: How to check purity? Is gold pure or not?

• Hall marks are given by ISO (Indian Standard Organization) to identify the purity of gold. 24 carat gold is 99.9 percent pure and 22 carat is about 91 percent pure.
• 24 karat gold should have 1.0 purity (24/24 = 1.00). 22 carat gold should have 0.916 purity (22/24 = 0.916). 24 carat gold jewelery is marked 999, 23 carat is 958, 22 carat is 916, 21 carat is 875 and 18 carat is 750.
• Jewelery is prepared by mixing 9% other metals like copper, silver, zinc in 22 carat gold. There is no adulteration in 24 carat, its coins are available, but jewelery cannot be made of 24 carat gold, hence most of the shopkeepers sell 18, 20 and 22 carat gold and make jewelery from it.

Hallmarking rules on silver

• After gold, now the rule of hallmarking has been implemented on silver jewelery from September 1, 2025. Hallmarking is not mandatory for silver. You can also buy unhallmarked silver.
• Under hallmarking rules, silver will have a 6-digit unique HUID code.
  This will immediately reveal the purity of the jewel and whether it is genuine or not.
• The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 new standards for the purity of silver – 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. Numbers 925 or 9250 mean that the silver is 92.5% pure.
