Even if you've turned off your smartphone, it can still send your location, messages, or data to someone. It may sound strange, but it's possible. Cybercriminals have now discovered a way to keep sending data even after the phone is turned off. This is being called the "fake shutdown smartphone scam."
How does this scam work?
In modern smartphones, some systems remain running in low-power mode even when turned off, such as the network module, security lines, and signal processor. This system becomes an opportunity for criminals. Fraudsters install malware on smartphones that displays a fake screen indicating the phone is off. This blacks out the screen and makes the phone appear dead, but in reality, the location remains on. Its microphone remains active, and the camera can be used. This allows WhatsApp or call data to be stolen.
How does malware enter the phone?
In most cases, malware enters the phone through fake delivery messages, courier links, loan apps, or quick money applications. Sometimes, it's through a bank form, APK file, or even downloads from a third-party app store. Once installed, the malware asks for system-level permissions. If the user accidentally grants permission, it can override the actual shutdown.
What are the recent cases?
In recent cases, it was observed that victims' phones were off, but were still transmitting signals to mobile towers. Forensic teams found in logs that the SDK-level malware was keeping the radio module active, making it easier for criminals to monitor victims' movements and locations.
How to protect yourself?
To avoid this cyber scam, first stop opening unknown APKs, loan, or delivery links. Don't grant accessibility permissions to any app, and don't make fake apps Device Admin. Limit app installation permissions to the Play Store only. Keep the phone on vibrate when shutting down.
