Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia told the Lok Sabha on December 17 that India’s annual telecom exports have increased by **72%** in the last five years, from Rs 10,000 crore in FY 2020-21 to **Rs 18,406 crore** in FY 2024-25. Imports remained stable at around **Rs 51,000 crore**, reflecting the progress made towards self-reliance and global leadership in the telecom sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
On **5G deployment**, Scindia stressed on coverage in **767 out of 778 districts** with existing subscribers at **36 crore**. It is estimated that by 2026 this number will increase to **42 crore** and by 2030 **100 crore**.
In respect of **Satellite Communication (SATCOM)**, which is required for areas remote from conventional infrastructure, a policy framework has been established with administrative spectrum allocation. Licenses have been issued to **Starlink**, **OneWeb** and **Reliance**. TRAI’s decision on spectrum charges and security clearance is awaited for commercial rollout, with gateways hosted in India mandatory. Operators are doing demos with sample spectrum.
These developments reflect India’s endeavor to have comprehensive, choice-based telecom services across the country.
