Aadhaar card is no longer just an identity document—it has become the backbone of India’s financial, social, and digital ecosystem. From banking and taxation to government subsidies and mobile connections, Aadhaar plays a crucial role in everyday life. Keeping this document accurate and updated has now become even more important, as the government has introduced new rules for Aadhaar updates along with a revised list of acceptable documents.

These changes aim to strengthen data security, reduce misuse, and prevent fake or duplicate entries in the Aadhaar database. If you are planning to update your name, address, date of birth, or other details, it is essential to understand these new requirements to avoid rejection or delays.

According to government officials, the revised rules focus on improving the authenticity of Aadhaar data. Earlier, many updates were approved based on simple affidavits or letters issued by local authorities. However, such documents were often misused, leading to incorrect or fraudulent entries.

To address this issue, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has now made it mandatory to submit more reliable and verifiable documents issued by recognized government bodies. This ensures that only genuine changes are recorded and the Aadhaar system remains trustworthy.

Under the updated guidelines, the list of acceptable documents has been made more specific and stringent.

For address updates, documents like electricity bills or rent agreements alone may no longer be sufficient in many cases. Greater importance is now being given to documents such as bank passbooks, post office account statements, passports, voter ID cards, and other officially issued identity proofs.

For name or date of birth corrections, applicants must submit government-recognized documents such as birth certificates, school records, passports, or PAN cards. Informal affidavits or handwritten declarations are no longer considered reliable proof for major changes.

This shift reflects the government’s intention to maintain accuracy and consistency across all official records linked with Aadhaar.

In line with the Digital India initiative, UIDAI continues to offer online Aadhaar update services through the official myAadhaar portal. Address updates and minor corrections can still be done online by uploading valid documents.

However, biometric updates, including fingerprint and iris scans, must be completed at the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra. Additionally, individuals whose Aadhaar card is more than ten years old and has never been updated are strongly advised to re-verify their identity and address details.

This step ensures continued eligibility for government schemes, financial services, and digital verification processes.

The government has also emphasized transparency in Aadhaar update charges. Fixed fees have been notified for demographic and biometric updates to protect citizens from unauthorized or excess charges.

Applicants are advised to use only the official UIDAI website or authorized Aadhaar centers for updates. Any third-party agents demanding extra fees should be avoided.

When updating Aadhaar details for children, parents must ensure that documents such as birth certificates, school identity cards, and enrollment records are accurate and clearly readable. Any mismatch in details can lead to rejection of the update request.

Before applying for any Aadhaar correction, it is important to double-check all supporting documents and ensure that details like name spelling and date of birth match across records. Small mistakes can lead to delays or repeated visits to Aadhaar centers.
