Yantai Penglai International Airport’s Terminal 2 in China has been named the “world’s most beautiful airport,” according to a ranking by global architecture award Prix Versailles.
The honor was part of the awards to celebrate the 72 “World’s Most Beautiful” projects in 2025 in each of the categories – museums, hotels, restaurants, emporiums, airports, campuses, passenger stations, and sports.
Spread across 25 countries this year, all these architectural achievements were either recently built or underwent exemplary renovations, Prix Versailles said.
Yantai Penglai International Airport in Shandong Province spans167,000 square meters, carrying the design that pays tribute to Yantai’s coastal landscape.
The terminal’s sweeping roofline and undulating shapes reflect the natural beauty of the region, drawing inspiration from the Kunyu Mountain.
Its E-shaped layout is optimized to improve passenger flow while minimizing the impact on the existing terrain.
Inside, the terminal features natural materials and abundant natural light, creating a serene atmosphere for travelers.
Marseille Provence Airport’s Terminal 1 in France, Roland Garros Airport Arrivals Terminal in France and Kansai International Airport Terminal 1 in Japan were honored with “special prize for an interior,” while Portland International Airport ‘s Main Terminal in the U.S. for “special prize for an exterior.”
Singapore’s Changi Airport, which had frequently been voted the world’s best airport, is not featured on the list.
Announced each year at UNESCO since 2015, the Prix Versailles is a series of architectural competitions that shine a light on the finest contemporary projects worldwide.
