The winter session of the Legislative Assembly has started in Maharashtra. One year has passed since the assembly elections in Maharashtra, till now there is not even a leader of opposition in the House. The Assembly Speaker has not yet appointed the Leader of Opposition in the House. Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray says that the leader of the opposition should be appointed in both the Assembly and the Legislative Council.

Uddhav Thackeray says that if the government has an overwhelming majority then why is it not ready to accept the opposition. The government should appoint the Leader of Opposition. He also said that if the government is unable to choose the leader of the opposition, it will be the first time that a session will be held without the leader of the opposition.

What is troubling Maha Vikas Aghadi?

Mahayuti leader Uddhav Thackeray says that the post of Leader of Opposition is constitutional. If no leader of opposition is appointed then what is the point of a post like Deputy Chief Minister, it is not even constitutional.

Which posts are Maha Vikas Aghadi calling unconstitutional?

Government has been formed in Maharashtra with the cooperation of 3 constituent parties of Mahayuti. BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. Eknath Shinde is the Deputy CM from Shiv Sena quota, Ajit Pawar from NCP quota. Uddhav Thackeray is calling the posts of both Deputy Chief Ministers unconstitutional.

Whose claim is to be the leader of opposition in Maharashtra?

Shiv Sena (UBT) has 20 MLAs in the House. This party is the largest among the MVA parties. Shiv Sena is demanding the post of Leader of Opposition. Shiv Sena has nominated its MLA Bhaskar Jadhav for Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve’s tenure in the Legislative Council ended in August. Now Congress wants this post. Congress has nominated Satej Patil for Leader of Opposition. The figures are neither in favor of Shiv Sena nor Congress.

Why is there no opposition leader in Maharashtra?

There are total 288 seats in Maharashtra Assembly. To become the Leader of Opposition, it is mandatory to have at least 10 percent seats. No party of Maha Vikas Aghadi has so many seats. The majority figure in Maharashtra is 145 seats. Interestingly, Mahayuti has more than 200 seats in Maharashtra.

Whose claim is stronger?

No opposition party in Maharashtra has these numbers. Shiv Sena (UBT) has only 20 seats, Congress has 16 and NCP has 10 seats. All three cannot independently acquire the post of leader of the opposition.

Why is Mahayuti not giving the post of Leader of Opposition?

Eknath Shinde’s indication is clear that it is the decision of the people, not the Mahayuti government, that there will be no opposition in Maharashtra. The Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly is the biggest leader of the opposition. He is the main critic of the government in the assembly. If the opposition has more than 10% seats, it gets official status, cabinet minister-level salary, bungalow and security facilities.

He has the responsibility of bringing question hour, adjournment motion and no-confidence motion in the House. Is a member of committees like Public Accounts Committee, Public Undertakings Committee and Estimates Committee. The Leader of the Opposition does not have constitutional executive power but puts pressure on the government in the Assembly. Currently, MVA parties do not have the numerical strength in Maharashtra.
