'I fly regularly and this is why you need to pick worst seat for long flight'

Anyone who's endured a lengthy flight will be all too familiar with the discomfort that comes with being airborne for extended periods.

Perhaps one of the most irritating aspects of air travel is having an inconsiderate passenger seated behind you, repeatedly kicking your seat - particularly when you're attempting to catch some shut-eye. However, one seasoned traveller has revealed their clever hack to sidestep this nuisance and ensure a far more tranquil journey on your next trip.

The somewhat unconventional suggestion involves deliberately avoiding what's typically regarded as the 'prime' seat on an aircraft, and instead plumping for an alternative spot. Writing for escape.com.au, John Burfitt disclosed that he consistently chooses to book the 'worst' seat available when flying.

  • I was exhausted all the time — then I was told I had a common vitamin deficiency
  • Historic priory is 'peaceful' escape with 12th century church hidden in wooded valley

That particular seat happens to be the window position at the very rear of the plane, situated directly adjacent to the lavatories. Whilst some travellers might be deterred by the proximity to where fellow passengers answer nature's call, fearing unpleasant odours, John insists it can actually prove to be the most peaceful location on board.

He recounted how, following one flight where he endured constant kicks from the passenger behind him, he made a pledge to never suffer through such an ordeal again. Near the conclusion of that journey, whilst making his way down the aisle to use the facilities, he had an epiphany - behind the final row of seats was simply a wall, meaning if he positioned himself there, nobody could ever kick his seat again.

"In that instant, I decided the back row would be the only place I would sit on a long flight from now on," he penned. "Sure enough, on my next flight, I booked into the back row of the cabin and, even better, my seat was the one right next to the window. As I nestled into that corner, I discovered what true airline love is about. I had just found the best seat on the plane."

He proceeded to reel off the numerous advantages of his preferred perch - including avoiding being kicked from behind, steering clear of trolley collisions, dodging bumps from fellow passengers navigating the aisle, and having the luxury of leaning against the corner wall for a proper kip. But the perks don't stop there.

Travel experts at pipeaway.com suggest that plumping for rear seats could mean bagging an entire row to yourself, given that most travellers tend to avoid the back of the aircraft. This presents the opportunity to stretch out luxuriously across two or three seats if you fancy. They also point out that the final row proves ideal for passengers seeking distance from youngsters, as families typically find themselves allocated bulkhead seating.
