The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday expressed confidence that Mumbai is set to get its first BJP “Marathi” mayor, signalling what the party believes will be a decisive victory in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

Responding to questions on whether the BJP could secure the mayor’s post in Mumbai for the first time, party spokesperson Keshav Upadhye said there was no ambiguity. He asserted that Mumbai’s civic body would soon be led by a Marathi mayor from the BJP, calling it a historic moment for the party.

Upadhye said the municipal election results clearly pointed towards the BJP emerging as the leading force in the BMC. According to him, electoral trends leave little doubt that the mayor will be from the BJP, and the party is confident that the position will be held by a Marathi leader.

Describing the development as the outcome of decades of sustained effort, Upadhye said the BJP began its political journey in Mumbai as a junior partner and gradually expanded its footprint over the past four decades. He added that the party crossing the 100-seat mark in the civic polls reflected the strength of that long-term groundwork.

While noting that discussions within the ruling Mahayuti alliance would take place regarding key leadership positions, Upadhye said the BJP’s long-standing ambition of having its own mayor in Mumbai was now on the verge of being realised.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity in the city following the announcement of the civic election results, with parties closely monitoring developments related to the formation of the new municipal leadership at the BMC.
