BJP’s previous statements and distance from Akali Dal
Chandigarh. Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu recently said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can come to power in Punjab without the support of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). He gave this statement during the protest on law and order and other issues. When asked if BJP could form an alliance with SAD again, he categorically said that there is no discussion on the subject. Bittu also told that there are many different factions within the Akali Dal.
Bittu’s attack on Akali Dal
Bittu accused SAD that drugs and gangsterism were common during their reign. He raised the question whether such an alliance was necessary. Responding to his words, AAP leader Baltej Pannu said that Bittu has raised serious questions. He said that forging an alliance with the Badals (SAD) would mean accepting the return of drugs and gangsterism in Punjab.
BJP’s performance
Several senior leaders of Punjab BJP recently joined a protest organized by the party. BJP attempted to gherao the residence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, but was stopped by the police. Police detained several leaders including Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar, Manoranjan Kalia for some time. Accusing the AAP government, Jakhar said that at present there is no safety of the common man in Punjab and the continuation of “gangster rule” is a matter of concern.
Election preparation
In October 2025, Bittu had announced that BJP would contest all 117 assembly seats in the state. It is noteworthy that SAD had left NDA in 2020 in protest against the agricultural laws, after which the possibility of re-alliance between the two parties is being discussed. There are speculations that both the parties may unite again before the 2027 assembly elections.
