A total of 21 people are reported to have died and 100 people injured after a train derailment, Spanish media say. Two high-speed trains derailed on Sunday in southern Spain, according to the railway operator ADIF.

At least 25 people have been seriously injured, according to the emergency services of Andalusia. The incident occurred near Adamuz, a town close to Cordoba. Rail network operator Adif confirmed the derailment, stating that the Iryo 6189 service, travelling from Málaga towards Madrid, left the track and crashed onto an adjacent line.

Iyro, a high-speed train operator in Spain confirmed the derailemt on X. "The service had departed from Málaga at 18:40 and, at the time of the incident, approximately 300 people were on board," said the statement.

"Iryo deeply regrets what has happened and has activated all emergency protocols." The company added it is working closely with the relevant authorities to manage the situation.

A second train travelling between Madrid and Huelva, on the adjacent track, derailed as well. All high-speed train traffic between Madrid and Andalusia has been suspended because of the incident.

Andalusia's emergency services said all rail traffic in the area was halted, with at least nine ambulances and multiple emergency support vehicles sent to the scene.

Spain's transport minister, Oscar Puente, said the impact of the incident has been "terrible".

He said on X: "The latest information coming in is very serious. The last units of the Iryo train heading toward Madrid have derailed, with those cars invading the opposite track where, at that moment, a Renfe train heading toward Huelva was traveling. The impact has been terrible, causing the first two units of the Renfe train to be thrown off as a result.

"The number of victims cannot be confirmed at this time. The fundamental priority now is to assist the victims.

The regional interior minister has activated emergency procedures, with a command post established in Adamuz.

Salvador Jimenez, a journalist for RTVE, was a passenger on board the train from Cordoba to Madrid. He told the news channel that one of the derailed carriages "had completely overturned" and had broken windows.

He shared images showing the rear carriage of the train lying on its side, with evacuated passengers spotted sitting alongside the overturned carriage.
