Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026: Are you troubled by your bank's behavior? Have discrepancies in account transactions, excessive charges, or poor service added to your woes? Now, dealing with such issues will be easier. From July 1st, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is implementing the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme 2026. Under this scheme, customers can complain directly to the RBI and get quick resolutions. In case of financial loss to a customer, the Ombudsman can now award compensation up to ₹30 lakh.
The Reserve Bank of India has introduced the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2026, to make it easier for customers to resolve complaints against banks and other financial institutions. This scheme will come into effect from July 1, 2026, and will replace the old 2021 scheme. It aims to ensure that customers facing issues with poor service, delays, incorrect charges, or account handling problems from banks, NBFCs, digital wallets, etc., can get their complaints resolved quickly and fairly.
Compensation up to ₹30 lakh available
Under this scheme, customers will not have to go to court directly for their complaints. If a customer has suffered a loss due to the fault of a bank or financial institution, the RBI Ombudsman can award compensation up to ₹30 lakh. Additionally, up to ₹3 lakh can be awarded for the customer's time, expenses, or mental distress.
Who is covered?
Banks: Commercial banks, Regional Rural Banks, State and Central Cooperative Banks, and Urban Cooperative Banks (with deposits of ₹50 crore or more)
NBFCs: Those that accept deposits or have assets exceeding ₹100 crore, and are involved in customer transactions (excluding housing finance and core investment companies)
Digital wallets, such as prepaid payment issuers and credit information companies
How to file a complaint?
First, file a written complaint with the concerned institution (such as your bank) and give them time to respond. This is usually 30 days or the time specified by the RBI. If you do not receive a response or the response is unsatisfactory, file a complaint with the RBI Ombudsman within 90 days.
How to file a complaint:
Online: CMS portal
Email: crpc@rbi.org.in
Mail: Centralized Receipt and Processing Centre (CRPC), Chandigarh
Importance for customers:
This scheme empowers ordinary customers to seek redress without getting involved in legal complexities. Even after the repeal of the old 2021 scheme, existing cases will be settled under the old rules.
