Bacon is perfect when you want something tasty and indulgent to start the day, but cooking it can often be messy due to oil splattering everywhere. Oil tends to spit which can burn your face, cause a kitchen to smell awful and tends to burn deeply into a pan so you end up having to spend ages scrubbing at your dishes.
However, what many people do not realise is that you do not actually need oil to fry bacon as it already naturally fatty meat that tastes wonderful crispy and smoky if it is cooked in its own fat. Eric Haessler, a professional chef, has revealed his favourite method to make crispy bacon is to cook in with a splash of water instead. On his page Chef Eric Explains, he said: "Cooking bacon in water? It sounds wrong, but water is the key to the easiest, most perfectly crisp bacon you can make."
Bacon can burn quickly in a frying pan as it is usually cooking in both its own fat and oil, which often causes the white strips to become really charred and taste bitter.
Most people take bacon off the heat as soon as they see the white strips beginning to burn, and this can lead to the middle of the pink meat still being slightly raw and chewy.
Using water instead of oil is a simple cooking technique to control the temperature in the pan and helps the bacon fat slowly melt out so it cooks everything more evenly.
It results in a much better crispy and golden texture on the bacon so each bite will have a really satisfying crunch.
Oil can make bacon really greasy which will dull its natural smokiness, which means cooking it in water helps improve the flavour so you get a much tastier breakfast.
To begin, place a large unheated pan on the stove and then add the bacon to the pan. It is fine to overcrowding the pan as a big advantage of this cooking method is that you can cook big batches of bacon at the same time.
Next, fill a glass with roughly 60ml of water and pour it all over the bacon. You want the water to barely cover the strips, and be careful not to add to submerge it.
Switch the stove on to a medium-heat and bring the pan to a simmer. The keeps the pan at a steady temperature so the bacon will begin to cook evenly and gently.
Cook the bacon for a few minutes until the water evaporates, and when the fat renders out, it wil begin to fry the bacon
Flip it over occasionally so each side becomes is browned, and then take it out the pan. Your bacon will be rendered and crispy without needing any other ingredients at all.
