Eggs are a daily staple in many Indian households and are valued for their high protein and nutrient content. They are rich in vitamins A, D, E, B12, and K, along with minerals like iron, zinc, selenium, and phosphorus. However, consuming a spoiled egg can cause serious stomach problems and food poisoning. That’s why it’s important to check eggs properly before eating them.

Here are some easy and reliable ways to find out whether an egg is fresh or has gone bad.

1. Water test

Fill a bowl with cold water and gently place the raw egg inside.

  • If the egg sinks and lies flat, it is fresh.

  • If it stands upright or floats, it has likely gone bad and should not be eaten.

This happens because air enters the egg over time, making it float.

2. Shake test

Hold the egg close to your ear and gently shake it.

  • No sound usually means the egg is fresh.

  • A sloshing or watery sound suggests the inside has thinned out, indicating spoilage.

3. Smell test

Crack the egg onto a clean plate and smell it.

  • Fresh eggs have little to no smell.

  • A strong, rotten, sulphur-like smell clearly means the egg is spoiled.

4. Check the yolk and white

After cracking the egg:

  • The white of a fresh egg is thick and does not spread too much.

  • If the white is very runny, avoid eating it.

  • If the yolk has green, blue, or black spots, it may indicate bacterial growth.

5. Inspect the shell

Look closely at the eggshell before cracking it.

  • A fresh egg usually has a slightly rough, matte shell with no cracks.

  • Cracks, holes, or slimy patches increase the risk of bacterial contamination.

6. Trust your instincts

If an egg looks unusual, smells odd, or fails any of these tests, it’s safer to throw it away. Eating a questionable egg can do more harm than good.
