The England cricket team suffered another defeat after their 1-4 Ashes loss to Australia which led Luke Wright to announce his resignation from the position of men's selector. Wright's decision came after their team suffered a major loss. He will maintain his current role until the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 which is scheduled from February 7 to March 8.

Wright revealed his decision on Thursday, January 22 after working in the role for over three years. Wright said: “It has been a true honour and privilege to serve as an England Men’s selector over the past three years. I have fully immersed myself in the role and am incredibly proud of the players we have brought through."

He added: "The role demands significant travel and time away from home and with a young family the time feels right to pass the baton on to the next person. I now look forward with real interest and enthusiasm to whatever cricketing roles the future may hold."

Wright's resignation as selector for the England men's team has created additional stress for Rob Key who serves as the ECB men's Managing Director and for Brendon McCullum who works as the head coach. Key continues in the job, while McCullum is currently in Sri Lanka for the white-ball series as part of England’s build-up to the upcoming T20 World Cup, and both leaders face critical scrutiny over team direction and future plans. Their decisions will be closely watched in the months ahead.

However, on hearing of Luke Wright’s departure, Rob Key extended his gratitude, stating, “I have absolutely loved working with Luke. His contribution to English cricket has been exceptional and I trust his judgement as much as anyone. He has added so much more to this role than just being a selector. I’m very sad to see him go and I wish him and his family all the best for the future. I have no doubt that at some stage down the road he will enhance English cricket once again.”
