Tottenham in talks to sign Andy Robertson in surprise Liverpool transfer raid

Tottenham are reportedly working on a surprise move for Liverpool's Andy Robertson, as the Scottish international approaches the end of his contract. Robertson, who is widely considered one of the best left-backs in Premier League history, has fewer than six months left on his deal and hasn't yet signed fresh terms.

Robertson originally joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 and has since made 363 appearances for the Anfield outfit. The Glasgow-born ace has won two league titles at the club, and was part of the Liverpool team that lifted the 2019 Champions League in Madrid.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Spurs had initially identified Robertson as a target during the summer transfer window, but weren't successful with their pursuit. Tottenham continued to keep tabs on his situation, but have opted to up the ante in recent weeks, as they look to bolster Thomas Frank's squad for the second half of the season.

It's suggested that talks of an amicable nature have taken place between the north London outfit and Robertson, as well as Liverpool, who are said to be open to a sale. That's because even though Robertson still has deep admiration for the Liverpool board, the club's hierarchy won't stand in his way, should the fullback decide to leave for a new challenge.

Robertson would add a wealth of experience to Spurs' ranks, while helping to plug a problem position for Frank and co., given the injury problems they've had at left-back. Destiny Udogie has started just 10 league games this season, with Djed Spence often deputising at the back.

Commenting on his future earlier this month, Robertson said: "We've had chats now which will remain private; we'll see what happens. I've got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there's options to go and things like that. I'll sit down with my family and decide. After a stressful summer, I'm just trying to enjoy being a part of it, and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we've managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants."

He continued: "I can focus on the last eight and a half years. I think Jürgen Klopp left me out of one game and I was raging. I'm a player who wants to play. I've played through injuries. I've played when I've only been 50, 40, 30 per cent fit for this club and my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that's not happening, so that's different.

"I have a different role here this season which I'm getting enjoyment out of but footballers want to play and, if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don't belong at any football club. If you're happy to be at Liverpool, wanting to sit on the bench, then I don't think you have the right attitude. I've played well in the games I've played this season. Maybe I've not played as much as I would have liked, but it's nothing I've been surprised by. Let's see what happens."
