Vietnam clinched third place at the U23 Asian Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout win over South Korea, sealed by Nguyen Thanh Nhan’s decisive spot-kick. Vietnam had taken the lead through Nguyen Quoc Viet following a swift counter-attack, but South Korea equalized with a brilliant individual moment by Kim Tae-won.
But just two minutes later, Nguyen Dinh Bac got Vietnam ahead again with a stunning free kick. It was also Dinh Bac who caused difficulties for Vietnam when he was sent off in the 86th minute.
In the last minute of stoppage time, South Korea equalized again to force extra time. Reduced to 10 men, Vietnam endured heavy pressure, with goalkeeper Cao Van Binh producing a series of crucial saves throughout extra time.
With the score still level, the match went to penalties, where Vietnam held their nerve to defeat South Korea and secure third place, capping a resilient and spirited performance against the odds for Vietnam.
