Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette of Orange-Nassau have announced their decision to divorce after 25 years of marriage. The Dutch couple, who share three children, have released a statement sharing the news.
The statement read: "After 25 years of marriage, we have decided to end our marriage. This decision has been made by mutual agreement and with mutual respect." They said that the "care and upbringing" of their children will remain their main focus.
The statement added: "We will continue to share the care and upbringing of our three children. Nevertheless, this remains a difficult step, and we therefore ask for understanding and respect for our privacy."
The couple are parents to their daughter Isabella, 23, and two sons, Samuel, 21, and Benjamin, 17.
Prince Bernhard and Princess Annette shared the news of their engagement in March 2000. The couple tied the knot in a civil ceremony on July 6, 2000.
The marriage was blessed two days later, on July 8, 2000, by Dr. Anne van der Meiden in the Cathedral of Saint Martin, Utrecht.
They welcomed their first child, their only daughter, less than two years later.
Commenting on an Instagram post shared by @dutchroyals_, fans shared their opinions on the news. One fan, translated from Dutch, commented: "It happens in the best of families. Wishing you much strength and wisdom."
Another commented: "How sad for this family. Wish them strenght to deal with that as a family [red-heart emoji]."
