T20 World Cup 2026: The decision of Bangladesh Government and Cricket Board (BCB) to boycott T20 World Cup 2026 is going to prove to be the most expensive suicidal step in their sporting history. After refusing to come to India citing security reasons, Bangladesh are not only out of the tournament but are now facing a ‘financial doom’. According to latest reports, Bangladesh is going to suffer a direct loss of Rs 240 to 250 crore due to this one decision.

Direct loss of Rs 240-250 crore

According to PTI and other international media reports, Bangladesh will have to face a huge cut in the annual income from ICC due to not participating in the T20 World Cup. About $27 million (about Rs 240-250 crore) received from ICC’s revenue share may be withheld. Due to this decision, there will be a huge decline of up to 60% in the annual income of BCB.

ICC announces ‘fine’ and ‘participation fee’

Under the ICC’s ‘Member Participation Agreement’ (MPA), if a board backs out of committing to a global event, it faces strict action. Bangladesh will suffer a direct loss of $300,000 to $500,000 (about Rs 2.5 to 4 crore) received as participation fee for the group stage. The ICC can impose an additional fine of up to $2 million (approximately Rs 16.5 crore) on BCB.

‘Bankruptcy’ in sponsorship and broadcasting

Not only the board, but the entire cricket ecosystem of Bangladesh will have to pay the price for this. Bangladesh’s official broadcaster ‘T Sports’ is expected to suffer a loss of around 300 crore taka. There is news of about 100 crore taka being withdrawn by advertising companies and sponsors. When the team is not on a big stage like the World Cup, brands will avoid investing their money.

Impact on future bilateral series and bilateral relations

The effect of this boycott will not be limited to this World Cup only. India’s tour of Bangladesh, proposed in August-September this year, is now on the verge of cancellation. The income from this one series is equal to that of 10 other series of Bangladesh. The chances of Bangladesh hosting ICC events in future are now slim to none.

Hurt on players’ career and earnings

The biggest loss will be to those players of Bangladesh who wanted to make their mark on the global stage through the T20 World Cup. Players will have to lose a large portion of tournament bonuses and match fees. This could have been the last World Cup for many senior players, which has now ended without playing.
