The local government in Mhow, a town in Madhya Pradesh's Indore district, has mobilized survey teams and established two temporary medical facilities following reports of residents falling ill due to potentially contaminated drinking water.
According to official statements, at least 12 individuals exhibiting symptoms of stomach infections were identified in the Patti Bazaar area on Friday. However, local residents reported that around 24 people had become ill after consuming the tainted water.
This incident follows a previous outbreak in Indore's Bhagirathpura area, where over 1,400 individuals experienced similar health issues, including vomiting and dehydration, after drinking contaminated water. This earlier situation was first noted on December 24.
While local residents claimed that the outbreak resulted in 25 fatalities, a report submitted to the court by the state government on January 15 confirmed seven deaths, including that of a five-month-old infant.
Authorities in Indore had previously received complaints from Bhagirathpura residents regarding an unusual odor in their water supply.
On Friday, District Collector Shivam Verma directed the deployment of 12 teams to survey more than 80 households in Patti Bazaar. The administration also confirmed the establishment of two temporary hospitals in the vicinity.
Mhow, officially known as Dr Ambedkar Nagar, is situated approximately 23 kilometers from Indore city.
Currently, 12 suspected patients are receiving treatment, with some hospitalized. Two individuals have reportedly recovered and been discharged.
Testing of blood and water samples is underway in the affected area, and local pediatricians along with two child specialists have been engaged to assist with the situation.
