Hyderabad:Another serious case of alleged inhumane treatment of stray dogs has come to light in Telangana. Animal rights organizations have alleged that around 300 stray dogs were deliberately killed in Jagityal district. This incident has raised concerns about animal welfare not only in the state but in the entire country. Activists claim that so far around 900 stray dogs have lost their lives in such incidents in recent months.
Allegations of conspiracy at Gram Panchayat level
Animal rights activists say that this act did not happen suddenly, rather the locally elected public representatives may have played a role in it. It is alleged that in the name of fulfilling the promises made to the villagers before the Gram Panchayat elections, the path of eliminating stray dogs was adopted. It is being said that this illegal and cruel step was taken in view of the villagers’ resentment over the increasing number of dogs.
Complaint registered in Pegadapalli village
The latest case came to light on January 22 from Pegadapalli village, where a complaint was lodged that around 300 stray dogs were killed by giving poisonous injections. In the complaint, the village Sarpanch and Gram Panchayat Secretary have been held responsible for this entire matter. It is alleged that on the instructions of the Sarpanch, this work was assigned to some people, who killed the dogs and buried their dead bodies.
Police investigation and FIR registered
Considering the seriousness of the matter, the police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Indian Justice Code (BNS) and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. According to Jagityal police, during the investigation, bodies of 70 to 80 dogs were taken out of the grave from one place. Initial investigation has revealed that these bodies were buried three to four days ago.
Awaiting post mortem report
Investigating officer Inspector C. Kiran said that at present no one’s involvement can be officially confirmed. He said that only after the post mortem report comes, it will be clear how the dogs died and who played a role in it. Police say that the matter is being investigated from all aspects and strict action will be taken against the culprits.
Increasing incidents in the state
This case is not alone. In the month of January itself, such incidents have been reported from many parts of Telangana. According to animal rights organizations, on January 19, around 100 stray dogs were accused of being poisoned to death in Yacharam village near Hyderabad, where around 50 dead dogs were recovered from the spot.
Cases have already been registered
Earlier, a case was registered against nine people, including two women sarpanches and their husbands, in connection with the death of about 300 dogs in Shyamapet and Arepalli villages of Hanamkonda district. Similarly, in Kamareddy district also, action was taken against six people including five village sarpanches for killing about 200 stray dogs.
