US Winter Storm 2026: The worst winter storm in the US, which has put more than 150 million Americans in a weather emergency, started on Friday morning (local time) with heavy snowfall in Northwest Texas and Oklahoma City. This extraordinary weather will bring severe cold, snow, sleet and snowfall to many parts of America and so far at least 15 states have declared a state of emergency in view of the storm.

The National Weather Service has predicted heavy snowfall from Oklahoma to the Northeast, where more than a foot of snow could fall in some places by Monday.

‘Expect widespread freezing rain and hailstorm’

In addition, widespread freezing rain and sleet are expected across the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley and the Southeast, the NWS wrote on X. Storms can cause significant or locally destructive snow accumulations, causing prolonged power outages, widespread tree damage, and extremely dangerous or impassable travel conditions.

According to Reuters report, the storm is expected to continue for several days as it moves towards the densely populated Mid-Atlantic and north-eastern states, bringing daily life to a standstill and bringing cold air across the country. According to CNN, the storm’s snow and sleet will spread across more than 2,000 miles from Texas to New England.

1,800 flights cancelled, travel disrupted

The storm is disrupting air travel across the US and airlines are now canceling flights, warning of delays and issuing travel waivers as snow, sleet and high winds continue to batter major hubs and regional airports across the South, East and Central America.

According to tracker Flightaware, more than 1,800 weekend flights have already been cancelled. Delta Air Lines on Friday urged passengers traveling this weekend to reschedule their flights in view of the storm.

Airports may have to be closed

Meanwhile, the Federal Aviation Administration said it expects “airports to close” as the weather impacts air travel from Texas to the Northeast, CNN reported.

“The FAA is already working closely with airlines to redeploy aircraft prior to the anticipated airport closures,” the agency was quoted as saying.
