Tehran. In view of the threat of US attack, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has shifted to a bunker in the capital Tehran. According to reports from Iranian media organizations, this bunker has been completely prepared like a fortress for wartime security. Khamenei’s third son, Masoud Khamenei, is now handling the day-to-day work of his office and is in constant contact with top Iranian officials.
Recently, US President Donald Trump warned Iran that a US naval armada is moving toward the Middle East. Warships are being deployed near the region to be able to take action against Iran if necessary. US Navy officials said the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers are currently in the Indian Ocean and will soon arrive in the Middle East. Additional air defense systems are also being deployed, possibly to protect US and Israeli air bases.
Reacting to the US move, General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said Iranian forces are “more prepared than ever” and are awaiting orders from the Supreme Leader. A senior Iranian official said any attack would be considered “full-blown war” and Iran would respond “in the harshest way.”
Amid military tensions, internal unrest is growing in Iran. Protests erupted in late December, fueled by the economic crisis and the falling value of the rial, and spread across the country. Security forces launched a sweeping crackdown and shut down internet services. At least 5,002 people have been killed so far, including 43 children and 40 civilians, according to the US-based HRANA. Around 26,541 people have been arrested.
