Horror as woman dies near little seaside village after incident

A woman has died after getting into difficulty near Helen's Bay, Northern Ireland, on Saturday. The woman was one of three people to come into trouble on the County Down beach at around 1pm yesterday.

Emergency services, including theNorthern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS), rushed to the scene where the woman was taken to hospital. Despite their best efforts, the woman in her 60s died in the hospital. The police have confirmed her death is not being treated as suspicious.

A group of brave onlookers nearby spotted the group in trouble and tried to help rescue them from the sea, including one who went into the water to try and help.

Soon after, two emergency crews, a rapid response paramedic, a Hart (Hazardous Area Response Team) crew, a critical care paramedic and an ambulance officer arrived in Helen's Bay.

The Coastguard were also involved in the operation, with a helicopter being sent to aid alongside crews from Bangor and Portaferry.

Police and RNLI crews also worked at the scene.

North Down MP Alex Easton sent his condolences to the victim's family and friends and praised the group of onlookers who jumped in the water to try and help. He added his thanks to "members of the public who bravely attempted to help, and to the emergency services who responded so quickly and professionally.

"This tragic incident is a reminder of how quickly emergencies can arise around our coastline, and I encourage everyone to take care when visiting our beaches."
