Abhijit Majumdar dead: Iconic singer dies after spending tragic last months in hospital

Iconic Odia singer and composer Abhijit Majumdar died on Sunday, January 25, at the age of 54. The news was confirmed by the All The India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bhubaneswar, which stated that he suffered complications from refractory septic shock caused by an infection. He suffered a cardiac arrest at 7:43 am, and although medics worked for 80 minutes to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at 9:02 am.

He had been undergoing treatment in the hospital since September 4 last year. He developed Osmotic Demyelination Syndrome (ODS), a rare neurological disorder affecting the brain, which often results from rapid correction of blood sodium levels. He also suffered from hypertension, hypothyroidism, and chronic liver disease. An official statement from AIIMS, explained he had undergone prolonged treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being moved to the medicine ward on November 10 for continued care. Two days before his death, on January 23, he had developed a new infection and fever. It progressed to refractory septic shock, which led to a critical deterioration in his health.

The singer started his musical career in the early 2000s, and since then he has composed over 700 songs. He composed music for several Ollywood films and was best known for his hits Love Story, Sister Sridevi, Golmaal Love, Sundargarh Ra Salman Khan, Shriman Surdas, to name just a few.

The star shared one son, Ayush Majumdar, with his wife of over a quarter of a century, Ranjita Majumdar. Tributes flooded in as the news became public, with many high-profile figures and fans taking to X to express their grief.

Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik wrote: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of renowned music director and lyricist Abhijit Majumdar. His contributions to the Odia music world will always remain memorable. In this hour of grief, I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members, along with prayers for the eternal peace of the departed soul."

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared: "Hearing the news of the demise of Abhijit Majumdar, the renowned music director and singer of Odisha, I am deeply saddened and heartbroken. Through his unique musical style, he had, over many decades, carved out a special place in the hearts of Odia listeners. His untimely departure is an irreparable loss for the Odia art world. While praying for the eternal peace of his soul, I extend my condolences to the bereaved family members. Om Shanti."

A fan chimed in: "I very candidly remember how I used to vibe a lot in Abhijit Majumdar's song in my childhood, such a melodious voice. From Kancha Haladi to Balunga Toka,his expertise in singing is second to none. Rest in heaven, legend."

Another added: "Deeply saddened by the loss of Abhijit Majumdar, a revered vocalist and music director. His legacy in music, cinema, and culture is profound. Condolences to his family, friends, and all touched by his artistry. Praying for his eternal peace. Om Shanti."

"The demise of Abhijit Majumdar is a great loss to the Odia film industry. His music touched many lives and will continue to inspire generations. My sincere condolences. Om Shanti," a fifth person wrote.

Meanwhile, a sixth shared: "Omm Shanti RIP legendary music composer Abhijit Majumdar Dada. Your music will remain forever in our heart. A great loss for Odisha."
