WhatsApp is working on a new parental control system that will allow parents to create secondary WhatsApp accounts for their children. This system will have strict security restrictions that parents can control from their own phones. The child's account will be linked to the parent's primary account via a QR code, giving parents complete control over the account's security.
Why is WhatsApp introducing parental controls?
Nowadays, children start using smartphones and messaging apps at a young age. Considering this, WhatsApp is working on restricted accounts for users under 18 years of age. This will protect children's privacy, allow parents to monitor necessary activity, and safeguard them from inappropriate or unknown content.
How will secondary WhatsApp accounts work?
According to reports, this new system will require parents to set a 6-digit primary PIN. This PIN will be required whenever any significant changes need to be made to the child's account. During setup, parents will have to scan a QR code from their child's device using their own phone. After this, the child will not be able to change settings independently, and the account will remain completely under the parents' supervision.
Which features will be restricted?
Furthermore, to take security to the next level, WhatsApp has completely blocked some features in these secondary accounts.
No Updates Tab: In this new feature, children will not see Channels or broadcast content, preventing them from coming into contact with unknown or inappropriate information.
No Chat Lock: Children will not be able to hide (lock) any chats. This will allow parents to review who their child is communicating with at the device level.
Limited Contacts: The child will only be able to communicate with people saved in their contact list. This means the child will not be able to talk to strangers.
What will parents be able to see?
A common question is whether parents will be able to read their children's messages. According to reports, WhatsApp has clarified that messages and calls will remain completely private. This means WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption will remain intact. Parents will only be able to see which new contacts their child is adding or what their activity is, but they will not be able to read the messages (chats) or listen to calls. This feature strikes a balance between security and the child's privacy.
How long will the secondary account last?
This secondary account will remain linked until the parents remove it themselves or the child reaches WhatsApp's official age limit. Once the child reaches the required age, this account can be converted into a normal WhatsApp profile with all the features.
Currently, this feature is in the development phase and will soon be ready for a global rollout.
