Guwahati, Jan 26: Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya announced on Monday that only 467 out of 170,000 identified illegal foreigners have been sent back to their home countries from Assam.

During the Republic Day celebrations at Khanapara, he mentioned that since the establishment of Foreigners Tribunals, Assam has referred approximately 435,000 cases of suspected nationality up until October 31 of the previous year.

Out of these, over 350,000 cases have been resolved, leading to nearly 170,000 individuals being classified as illegal foreigners from the designated area.

Acharya stated, "A total of 467 illegal foreigners have been deported to their countries of origin through the established processes."

He also highlighted that currently, 14 border outposts and 14 patrol posts are functioning in collaboration with the BSF and local law enforcement along the India-Bangladesh border in the Cachar, Sribhumi, Dhubri, and South Salmara districts.

This security framework has bolstered Assam's secondary defense against illegal immigration and cross-border crimes, he noted.

The governor further pointed out that Assam has taken the lead nationally in implementing three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

According to evaluations by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Assam has been ranked first among all states in the execution of these new criminal laws.

Additionally, Acharya mentioned that the 29th state-level crime review conducted in November 2025 indicated a notable improvement in the state's crime statistics.

He stated, "The crime rate per one lakh population has decreased from 379 in 2021 to 121.6 in 2025. Incidents of crime against women have also reduced to 4,426 cases in 2025, down from 10,546 cases in 2024."

Furthermore, the governor announced that a high-security prison for 150 inmates is being established in Hajo, Kamrup district, as part of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs' prison modernization initiative.
