West Indies Announce T20 World Cup 2026 Squad; Hope to Lead
Cricket Gully | January 27, 2026 1:39 AM CST

The West Indies have announced their team for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, naming Shai Hope as the skipper of the side. The team which won the championship twice will start the competition with a powerful batting lineup but their ability to bowl remains uncertain.

The 15-member squad includes experienced names like Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder, along with rising talents such as Shamar Joseph and Akeal Hosein. Captain Shai Hope has been in good form, scoring a century for Pretoria Capitals in the recently completed SA20.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 will start on February 7 and take place in India and Sri Lanka until March 8. The West Indies will compete with England, Italy, Scotland and Nepal in Group C of the tournament. Scotland took over Bangladesh's position after the ban.

Top-Order and Middle-Order Options

West Indies have built a strong batting line-up for this World Cup. The core group consists of Hope, Hetmyer and Powell. Johnson Charles and Brandon King are also useful top-order options. Sherfane Rutherford will handle the middle order with his power hitting, while Powell brings experience and leadership value as a former captain.

West Indies will require their batsmen to achieve victory in all their upcoming matches. As captain Hope needs to establish the innings while Hetmyer and Powell deliver fast scoring during the middle overs.

Bowling Depth and Key All-Rounders

West Indies show some weakness in their bowling department. Jason Holder and Roston Chase are their main experienced all-rounders. Holder unlocks new-ball potential through his ability to control the game during late-overs while Chase offers batting support through his ability to deliver spin bowling.

Akeal Hosein and Shamar Joseph are the main young bowling talents in the squad. Hosein will be key in Indian conditions with his left-arm spin, while Joseph adds pace. Gudakesh Motie will support the spin unit, and Romario Shepherd offers all-round value with late-over hitting.

The Super Eight stage will accept two top teams from each group and West Indies require at least three victories to advance. They will start their tournament at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against Scotland on February 7. The team will play England in their major group match on February 11 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. They will then face Nepal on February 15, also at Wankhede.
