Line of Duty fans were thrilled when the show's leading actors reunited recently for a casual drink.
The popular BBC police drama came to an end in May 2021, but last year it was reported that a seventh series was in the works.
Although filming is scheduled to commence this spring in Belfast, the recent reunion of stars Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar has sparked speculation that the show might return earlier than expected.
The trio, who play key roles in the fictional AC-12 anti-corruption police unit, shared a jovial winter drink together. They snapped a photo with their pints in hand, which Martin captioned: "AC12 in the house (pub)."
This prompted fans to flood the comments section with hopes that this could signal the start of filming for Line of Duty series 7. One eager fan wrote: "Does this mean there will be more seasons of line of duty?"
Another chimed in: "This is absolutely excellent news!" A third added: "Can't wait for you all to come back in line of duty please get started so we can have something to look forward to."
The upcoming season, penned by Jed Mercurio, begins with Central Police's anti-corruption unit being disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards.
A new antagonist, sexual predator DI Dominic Gough, is set to emerge, although the actor playing this character has yet to be confirmed.
Adrian, 67, who portrays Supt Ted Hastings, welcomed the news, saying: "As we count down the AC12 days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back on set together next year. Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."
Martin, 41, who portrays DS Steven Arnott, expressed: "Line of Duty has been a job of a lifetime. Not only in terms of the show's success but the people I've had the opportunity to work with I now call some of my closest friends. I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together."
Vicky, 42, known for her role as DC Kate Fleming, chimed in: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The sixth series aired in 2021, with its finale becoming the most-watched drama episode, excluding soaps, since modern records began in 2002. Considering catch-up views, it garnered over 17 million viewers within 28 days, and the Beeb is likely expecting similar high ratings when the show returns.
