Carlos Alcaraz confronted the umpire in his Australian Open match against Alex de Minaurafter the Australian was hit with a baffling time violation, much to the displeasure of the booing crowd. During the closing stages of the first set, the umpire issued a time violation to De Minaur for taking too long to serve, leaving the home favourite utterly perplexed.
With Di Manaur serving to stay in the first set, the umpire intervened as he prepared to serve for the first time in the game. The announcement was met with a look of surprise from the Australian and loud boos from his home supporters. Even Alcaraz appeared to disagree with the decision.
The Spaniard showed his class by approaching the umpire to clarify. "I wasn't ready. I wasn't there," he said. There were then questions over whether the violation had been rescinded, with it appearing that it hadn't, meaning a second violation would result in a loss of first serve.
Responding to the incident, TNT sport commentator and former British number one Tim Henman said: "It's just a bizarre time for the umpire to get involved as well. It was a change of ends and Alcaraz says he was the one that wasn't ready."
De Minaur then served a first serve fault, before losing the point after a long rally on his second serve. Alcaraz went on to break the Australian's serve to take a competitive first set 7-5.
In the second set, the world number one raced into a 3-0 lead as he looked to take momentum. He secured the second set 6-2, before dominating the third set 6-1 to secure the match and a place in the final four.
The world No. 1 would will now take on Alexander Zverev, who defeated rising American star Learner Tien in four sets earlier on Tuesday in his quarter-final, in his first Australian Open semi-final.
The final two quarter-finals, between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti and Ben Shelton and Jannik Sinner will be played on Wednesday.
