India is poised to join the elite club of countries with space stations very soon. Taking a historic step in this field, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has begun work on the core structure of the Bharat Space Station (BAS). This space station will be established in low Earth orbit, where Indian astronauts and scientists will be able to conduct research for extended periods. This project is considered a game-changer for India's human space program.
First Module to Launch in 2028
ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre has contacted Indian aerospace companies for the construction of the first module of the Bharat Space Station. According to reports, this first module, named BAS-01, will be launched in 2028. With this, India's dream of establishing a permanent laboratory in space will formally begin.
Preparations to Accelerate After Gaganyaan Mission
The Bharat Space Station project will gain momentum after the Gaganyaan program. ISRO believes that this station will be crucial for long-term scientific experiments. It will also help in future space travel and the development of new technologies. Gaganyaan is India's first human space mission, which is being prepared for launch by 2027. According to ISRO chief S. Somanath, India could send its first crewed lunar mission by 2040, for which ISRO has already begun preparations.
Station Construction to be Completed by 2035
According to ISRO's plan, the space station will not be built all at once but in phases. After the first module, other modules will be launched separately and assembled in space. It is estimated that the Bharat Space Station will be fully operational by 2035. Each module will have a diameter of approximately 3.8 meters and a height of 8 meters. They will be made of AA-2219 aluminum alloy, which has been used in human space programs before. India Space Station ISRO 2028 Launch India Space Milestone
India's Space Station will be completely indigenous
The India Space Station will be entirely developed domestically, without any involvement from foreign agencies. All modules will meet safety standards for human use. ISRO has also started working on the possibility of having multiple core modules built by Indian companies to ensure the smooth operation of the mission over the long term.
India to join the club of select countries.
As soon as the first module of the India Space Station is placed in orbit, India will join the select list of countries that have their own space station. This list includes countries like the United States, Russia, the European Space Agency, Japan, Canada, and China. This achievement will further strengthen India's human spaceflight and orbital research capabilities globally.
