Dehradun: Though late, the snowfall in Uttarakhand has brought cheer to the tourism industry. The recent spell of snow coincided with the weekend and Republic Day holidays, leading to a surge in tourist arrivals across the state.
Popular destinations remained crowded for three days, giving a much‑needed boost to local businesses.

Mussoorie draws over one lakh visitors
Mussoorie, the “Queen of Hills,” witnessed the highest tourist rush. More than one lakh visitors arrived in just three days, filling hotels, guest houses, and homestays to capacity. Famous spots like Atal Udyan, George Everest, Kempty Falls, Bhatta Falls, Gun Hill, Lal Tibba, and Char Dukaan were bustling with activity. Nearby destinations such as Burashankar, Dhanaulti, and Kanatal also saw heavy footfall.
Local traders and hoteliers expressed happiness, saying the snowfall has revived business after weeks of slowdown. The influx of tourists provided employment opportunities and boosted sales in markets, restaurants, and transport services.
Auli turns into a snow paradise
The world‑famous snow sports destination Auli also came alive with more than 3,000 tourists arriving daily. Visitors enjoyed skiing and snowboarding on the snow‑covered slopes. Other scenic spots in Chamoli district, including Mandal Valley, Chopta, Lohajung Dewal, Jyotirmath, Pipalkoti, and Gopeshwar, also attracted tourists eager to experience the winter charm.
Meadows in Uttarkashi attract trekkers
In Uttarkashi district, Kedarkantha Bugyal, Dayara Bugyal, and Chaurangi Khal became popular trekking destinations. Around 5,000 tourists are expected to arrive in Kedarkantha over four days. Dayara Bugyal and Chaurangi Khal also witnessed steady arrivals. However, the closure of the Gangotri Highway and frost after snowfall reduced the number of visitors compared to expectations.
Boost for local economy
The snowfall has not only delighted tourists but also brought relief to locals who depend on tourism for their livelihood. Shopkeepers, hoteliers, taxi drivers, and guides reported increased earnings. Residents said the snow has restored the charm of Uttarakhand’s hill stations, which had seen fewer visitors earlier this winter.
Authorities have advised tourists to remain cautious while traveling on slippery roads and to follow safety guidelines. With more snowfall expected, tourism businesses are hopeful that the season will continue to thrive.
