Mythological story to Devuthani Ekadashi

According to the Puranas, when Lord Vishnu sleeps, all the gods also rest. According to belief, no auspicious work is done on earth during this period. This period ranges from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi) to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Devuthani Ekadashi).

It is said in the stories that once the demon Bali took over the three worlds, Lord Vishnu assumed the Vamana avatar. Lord Vamana asked Bali for three steps of land, after which he measured the sky in the first step, the earth in the second step and Bali’s head in the third step. Lord Vaman sent Bali to the underworld but seeing his devotion, Lord Vishnu himself started living in his world.

The gods, distressed by the absence of Lord Vishnu, prayed, then the Lord said that after four months, on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, I will wake up and return to Vaikuntha again. Devuthani Ekadashi started from the same day. On this day gods, sages and devotees celebrate the awakening of God.
