If Hollywood can do it then why not Bollywood? Is Bollywood ready to tell the story of environment?

While the global environmental crisis is intensifying, the Indian film industry does not reflect this reality. For decades, Bollywood has been a medium that brings people from different backgrounds together in the country. Cinemas have not only served as entertainment, but also to create social and cultural thought.

Yet today, even as issues like heat waves, water scarcity, pollution and climate change become part of everyday life, these issues seem to be secondary in mainstream Bollywood narratives. Most movies today revolve around love stories, grandiose dreams and stories that take away from reality.

In world cinema, however, the change is clearly felt. Topics like environment, resource scarcity and human responsibility are now becoming an integral part of storytelling. On the contrary, eco-centric films are rarely seen in Bollywood and even if they do come, they remain for a limited audience. Therefore, the time to adopt storytelling in line with the changing reality is becoming inevitable for Bollywood.

Hollywood has drastically changed its approach to storytelling over the years. Where movies used to be about aliens, superheroes and grand fantasy, now the issues of resource scarcity, pollution, climate change and ethical issues to the Earth have become mainstream.

Movies like “Don’t Look Up” and “An Inconvenient Truth” have presented the environmental crisis in an entertaining and effective manner. This change shows that today’s audience is not limited to just seeing the thrills; He is also attracted to social and moral questions connected with reality.

However, this change is still not evident in Indian cinema. While Bollywood focuses on love stories, grand dramatic scenes and fantasy stories, films that focus on environmental or social reality are rare. So, compared to this changing trend of Hollywood, Bollywood still seems to be stuck in traditional storylines.

Experts say that there is now a big opportunity for Bollywood to present environmental and social realities as the number of conscious audiences is increasing. Placing these themes in the cinema of the future is not only necessary, but culturally important. The same ambivalent status of Bollywood seems somewhat contradictory. Because today’s generation especially Gen-Xi is more conscious about the environment than ever before. Extreme heat, floods and polluted air are no longer just news stories. They have become a part of everyday life. Waste segregation, sustainability and smart cities are no longer just ‘buzzwords’.

Platforms like Mumbai Climate Week also reflect this shift, a citizen-led initiative that positions the environment as a cultural and social reality rather than just a policy debate. The message is simple. Discussions about the environment should not just be in the conference room, but in everyday conversation.

”I am pregnant…”, mother-to-be for the second time Rubina Dilaik shared the video and said,…

So the question is simple, is Bollywood going to be limited to escapism or is Indian cinema going to adopt the skill of presenting real issues in an interesting way? The time has come for today’s anxieties and restlessness to hit the big screen. Today, when culture and environment stand in the same frame, the only hope is that Bollywood will not treat ‘green storytelling’ as a boring lesson, but as a step towards its next big evolution.
