Michael Carrick rips up another Ruben Amorim plan as Man Utd overhaul continues

Michael Carrick tore up Ruben Amorim's plan for Bryan Mbeumo just days after replacing the former Manchester United boss. The ex-midfielder was appointed as his replacement until the end of the season earlier this month.

And Carrick has enjoyed a dream start, having won each of his opening two games against Manchester City and Arsenal. One of his main success stories has been the form of summer signing Mbeumo.

The Cameroonian scored against both City and the Gunners, taking his season record to nine goals in all competitions since his arrival from Premier League rivals Brentford. And despite his form having not changed too much since Carrick’s arrival, the Middlesbrough boss is seemingly taking a very different approach with his demands for the forward.

According to ESPN, former boss Amorim was keen to use Mbeumo’s versatility by employing him in a variety of positions across the frontline. But Carrick was more keen on the forward playing more as a central option with licence to roam.

Amad and Patrick Dorgu are stationed to assist him on either flank, with Bruno Fernandes acting as provider. That plan might now need a slight tweak with Dorgu out for an extended period, having picked up an injury against Arsenal.

Asked earlier this month what is different under Carrick, Mbeumo said: “A bit of everything. Training is different, mentality is different. We know we only have one aim and one way to go, so we have to do everything to do it.

"Every manager has his own character and thinks differently and the manager obviously knows the club very well because he's a legend here as a player, everyone wants to try and do their best as well.”

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has recently been full of praise for Mbeumo and his performances. He said: “I saw exactly what I thought about this player against Arsenal, it’s Mbeumo. I think in terms of movement, he’s very intelligent.

“He’s got this flair in front of the goal. He’s very good in terms of assists as well.” I love his work rate. I love his behaviour on the pitch, technically, mentally as well. But more importantly, I like his movement, the link with his players all the time.

“He brings something different up front. He’s not that physical, but in the meantime, he puts everything he has on the pitch. But I love him because he’s very intelligent.

“When I saw Manchester United buy him in the last transfer market, I thought, this is a good bargain.”

Mbeumo will be aiming to extend his brilliant recent form this coming weekend as United continue their push for a spot in the top four. The Red Devils host Fulham at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
