If you've ever contemplated the prospect of retiring abroad, there are countless factors to consider. Fortunately, International Living's annual destination report examines all the main elements, from the cost of living to how straightforward it is for expats to relocate.
Essential considerations include visa requirements, healthcare provision, and the nation's climate. After analysing 195 countries, the study named Greece as the top retirement destination for 2026. Greece offers a warm climate, a vibrant community and expats can rent a three-bedroom home with sea views for as little as £900 per month.
According to International Insurance, the healthcare system in Greece has both a public healthcare system and private care providers. Pensioners can pay around £220 per month for private healthcare to receive "consistently good" care.
"There are also high ratios of medical specialists for the population, and basic emergency care is free for everyone, even foreigners. Pharmacies, after-hours clinics, and community health centers provide more care options. In small towns and on remote islands, pharmacies are equipped to provide many medical services, including helping with small emergencies."
The second-best country to relocate to in 2026 is Panama. Panama offers an active expat community, and there's the option of public or private healthcare, with the latter offering modern amenities and English-speaking staff.
Popular retirement destinations such as Spain, Portugal, and Italy also made it to the top 10.
