- Shocking revelation of AIIMS
- 300 young people change gender every year
- The proportion of youth in the age group of 20 to 30 is highest
Gender Reassignment Surgery: For young people who maintain a mental identity separate from their physical identity AIIMS, Delhi The hospital has now become an important center. The ‘transgender clinic’ in AIIMS has seen a sharp increase in the number of patients seeking to change their sex, with the highest proportion being among youths in the age group of 20 to 30.
Why is the trend of gender reassignment increasing among youth?
According to doctors at AIIMS, approximately 300 new patients are being registered at the clinic every year, while around 600 patients are being treated regularly. These are youths who were born as physically normal boys or girls, but as they grew up, they began to feel that their ‘gender identity’ was different from their body. This mental condition is called ‘Gender Dysphoria’ in medical terms.
Treatment begins with hormone therapy
Rajesh Khadgawat, Professor, Department of Endocrinology, AIIMS, said that the process of gender reassignment does not start directly with surgery.
From girl to boy: Such patients are given male hormones, which cause them to grow beards and voice changes.
From boy to girl: In this, the posture of the body is changed with the help of female hormones. Hormone therapy, mental health testing and surgery are all available under one roof at AIIMS.

One year strict observation before surgery
The decision to change gender is huge not only physically but also psychologically. According to Professor Pratap Saran, head of the Department of Psychiatry, no patient is directly operated on. The person is supervised for at least one year. During this period the person has to face behavioral and mental changes in the society. Only when the doctor is sure that the patient is mentally ready, the green light is given for the surgery.
Expensive surgeries now easier
Sex reassignment surgery is very complicated and expensive. It involves reconstruction of body parts by a plastic surgeon. However, these expensive surgeries have now become easier due to the Ayushman Bharat scheme of the central government. The scheme has made special provisions for the transgender community, making it possible for even the poor to get their new identity.
