America’s irritation is coming out openly after the finalization of a huge trade agreement of unprecedented scale between India and the European Union (EU). According to America’s top trade representative Jamieson Greer, this trade agreement appears to be overall in India’s favor. According to the US, this agreement will give India wider access to European markets and may also increase the mobility of Indian workers in Europe.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in an interview to Fox Business that after the implementation of this agreement, India will be on top and this can prove to be a period of great opportunity for New Delhi. “I have seen some of the details of the agreement so far. I think, to be honest, India has been in benefit in this. They are getting more market access in Europe,” he said.

Pointing to possible provisions of the agreement, Greer added, “It looks like they also get some additional immigration rights. I’m not entirely sure, but EU President von der Leyen has talked about mobility of Indian workers in Europe. So overall, I think it will be a great time for India.”

On Tuesday, India and the European Union finalized this historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which has been billed as the ‘Mother of All Deals’. The agreement will create a combined market of nearly two billion people and set out a transformative agenda for the next five years that aims to strengthen the rules-based global order through trade and defense cooperation. This agreement will cover about one-fourth of the global gross domestic product (GDP).

Under this FTA, duties will be eliminated on 99 percent of India’s exports to the EU, while import duties will be reduced on more than 97 percent of EU exports to India. This is expected to give Indian industries a competitive edge in Europe.

However, the US trade chief downplayed the significance of the development, saying the changing global trade environment has forced the EU to look for alternative markets as the US is giving priority to domestic manufacturing and adopting relatively strict trade policies.

According to Greer, “It is important to understand strategically that since President Trump has prioritized domestic production and basically started charging other countries for access to our market, these countries are looking for other ways to source their excess production. That’s why the EU is looking at India.”

Let us tell you that even before this, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant had said before the trade agreement between India and the European Union, “Russian oil goes to India, refined products are made there and Europe buys the same refined products. They are financing the war against themselves.”

Now after the agreement, according to the American, this deal will give India more access to European markets with the help of its low-cost labor force, while the European Union seems to be moving towards placing more bets on globalization.
