Hajipur: A late-night shooting outside a residential home in Hajipur, Bihar, has left a 22-year-old woman dead and triggered anxiety among local residents, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. The victim was shot near the entrance of her house and later died while undergoing medical treatment, according to officials.

The incident has raised several unanswered questions, particularly because no witnesses reported hearing a gunshot despite clear evidence of a firearm injury. Authorities say all possible angles are being examined as the investigation progresses.
Incident Reported Near Chauhata Chowk
The shooting occurred on Thursday night in the Chauhata Chowk area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Nagar police station. Police identified the deceased as Gudiya Devi, the wife of Arjun Paswan, a resident of the same locality.
According to preliminary findings, the incident took place close to the doorstep of the family’s house, near a hand pump commonly used by residents. The location is in a densely populated area, adding to concerns among neighbours about safety and security.
Family’s Account of the Events
Gudiya Devi’s husband, Arjun Paswan, told police that he had returned home at around 11:15 p.m. after attending a dinner at a friend’s house. As the evening meal had not yet been prepared, Gudiya reportedly went downstairs to draw water from the hand pump.
Moments later, Arjun said, she suddenly collapsed. His mother, who was inside the house at the time, reportedly shouted for help upon seeing Gudiya fall. When family members rushed her back inside, they noticed blood and what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Medical Efforts and Death Confirmation
The family immediately arranged to take Gudiya to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors attempted to stabilize her condition, but she succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Hospital officials later confirmed that the cause of death was consistent with a firearm injury.
The body was subsequently taken into police custody and sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact nature of the wound and gather further forensic evidence.
Absence of Gunshot Sound Raises Questions
One of the most puzzling aspects of the case is the absence of any reported gunshot noise. Residents living nearby told police they did not hear any sound resembling a firearm discharge at the time of the incident.
Investigators are examining whether the weapon used could have been fitted with a suppressor or whether other factors may explain why the sound went unnoticed. This detail has added complexity to the case and deepened concerns among locals.
Police Action and Forensic Examination
Soon after receiving information, Nagar police reached the spot along with a forensic science team. Officers inspected the area around the house entrance and the hand pump, collecting physical evidence and examining items found scattered nearby.
Police confirmed that two individuals have been taken into custody for questioning. Officials said their statements are being verified as part of the broader investigation.
Dispute With Neighbours Under Scrutiny
Arjun Paswan has alleged that his family had an ongoing dispute with neighbours. He told police that an argument had taken place two days before the incident over water spillage, during which heated exchanges and threats were reportedly made.
The woman’s family, who were informed of the incident late at night, have also expressed suspicion toward the neighbours and urged police to conduct a thorough inquiry.
Investigation Continues, Police Say
Sadar SDPO Subodh Kumar stated that the case is being investigated from multiple angles. He confirmed that the woman died from a gunshot injury and said the earlier dispute is one of the factors being examined.
Police officials said it is too early to determine whether the killing was directly linked to the previous argument or if other motives are involved. Authorities added that clarity is expected after the post-mortem report and further questioning of those in custody.
