Mangaluru: Inter-district thief arrested; gold jewellery worth Rs 6.47 lakh seized

Mangaluru: Police have arrested a notorious inter-district thief who was involved in stealing passengers’ bags at bus stations. The accused was arrested near the Mangaluru Central Railway Station by personnel of the Mangaluru Barke police station.

The arrested person has been identified as Mohammed Imran N.M. (44), a resident of Madikeri in Kodagu district.

According to police, on the evening of January 23, a trolley bag belonging to a group that included two women and senior citizens went missing at the Bijai KSRTC bus stand in Mangaluru. The group was boarding a bus to Bengaluru at the time. The stolen bag contained 45 grams of gold jewellery and Rs 20,000 in cash. A case was registered at the Barke police station in this regard.

Under the guidance of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, a team led by PSI Vinayak Toragal, along with staff members Sujan, Vasudeva, Ravi Lamani, Siddu, Harish, Nitish and Galib, conducted an operation and successfully arrested the accused. He has been remanded to judicial custody.

Involved in 11 cases


During the investigation, police found that the accused is a habitual offender with a total of 11 cases registered against him across the state. These include bag theft cases registered at Hassan City, Hassan Rural, Dudda, Komanur, Channarayapatna and Devaraj Nagar police stations in Mysuru.

In addition, house theft cases have been registered against him at Shantigrama, Hassan Rural and Dudda police stations in Hassan district. Police also stated that a warrant had earlier been issued against him as he had failed to appear before the court after securing bail in a house theft case.

From the accused, police recovered 46.28 grams of gold ornaments worth about Rs 6,47,920 and Rs 5,000 in cash.
