The International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup dispute between Bangladesh and the ICC organization continued for three weeks until the governing cricket body reached its final judgment. Bangladesh requested the board to move their T20 World Cup 2026 matches from India to another location. The team planned to compete in four matches which would take place in Kolkata and Mumbai during the tournament’s first round. Bangladesh requested to shift their matches to Sri Lanka because they feared for their safety in India. The request came after Mustafizur Rahman left the Indian Premier League.
The ICC denied Bangladesh’s request but it established a 24-hour window for the team to make their ultimate choice. The apex cricket board eliminated Bangladesh from the tournament after the country maintained its existing position. Scotland became the replacement team for Bangladesh because it held the highest ranking among all teams that failed to qualify for the tournament.
Multiple reports indicate that Pakistan will either boycott the event to support Bangladesh or choose not to compete against India. Sri Lanka maintained its silence during the ongoing dramatic events which unfolded in various locations. Their silence attracted public interest because they serve as joint tournament hosts with India. The country has finally spoken up on the issue.
Cricket Secretary Bandula Dissanayake told AFP that Colombo wanted to avoid being drawn into regional disputes. The country maintains a neutral position between India and Pakistan and Bangladesh because all three countries maintain friendly relations according to him.
The official, however, added that Sri Lanka would be willing to host future tournaments for any of the countries if asked.
The current political situation between Pakistan and India has forced both teams to play their matches at neutral venues. As a result, Pakistan will be playing their T20 World Cup 2026 games in Sri Lanka, including the one against India
Sri Lanka has given the “highest priority” to ensuring the tournament runs smoothly and is “paying special attention to the India-Pakistan matches”, sports minister Sunil Kumara Gamage told the news agency.
The T20 World Cup 2026 tournament starts on February 7 and concludes with the final match on March 8.
