Scott McTominay has been warned that Manchester United must be his sole destination should he opt to return to the Premier League.

The 28-year-old departed Old Trafford in 2024 after spending 22 years at the club tosign for Napoli in a £25million transferand has flourished ever since making the switch. McTominay clinched the Serie A championshiplast year, which brought individual accolades as he secured both the Serie A MVPand Serie A Footballer of the Year awards.

He also received his maiden Ballon d'Or nomination, with his performances in Naples transforming him into a beloved figure amongst supporters in the Italian city. Since his departure from Manchester, he's spoken candidly about his affection for the club he supported as a youngster, though he's settled comfortably in Italy.

Whilst a comeback to his previous club appears improbable in the near future, United should remain the only English side he represents, according to club iconTeddy Sheringham.

In an exclusive interview, viaMr Q, the former United forward declared it would be a "travesty" if United permitted him to represent another Premier League outfit. He said: "If he comes back to England, then there's no way Manchester United can miss out on him.

"He simply cannot come back to the Premier League without going to Manchester United. That would be a travesty. That cannot happen." When quizzed about whether McTominay could one day make the switch to Liverpool despite his Man United connections, a baffled Sheringham dismissed the possibility outright.

He said: "McTominay and Liverpool? Really? I don't think that can happen. There's too much friction between Manchester United and Liverpool for him to even consider going there.

"If he's coming back to the Premier League, he has to go to Old Trafford, certainly from Manchester United's point of view." Sheringham, who lifted the Treble with United during the legendary 1998/99 campaign, was amongst the most vocal critics of McTominay's departure to Napoli, arguing that his former club desperately needs a player with his qualities right now.

He added: "I'm devastated to see him performing so well somewhere else. They could do with Scott McTominay at Manchester United right this minute. When he left, I wasn't happy. He's one of those players who digs in when things aren't going quite so well and makes things happen.

"I think that's exactly what you need when you're struggling. So when he left, I really wasn't happy, and then to see him doing so well just makes it even more of a bad move on Manchester United's part. ""But I'm delighted for him on a personal level that he's doing so well in Italy."

Despite United's struggles in midfield, it didn't prevent them from securing a remarkable 3-2 victory away at Arsenal on Sunday, climbing to fourth place in the table.
