Jackie Shroff was born on 1 February 1957 in Mumbai. His real name is Jaikishan Kakubhai Shroff. His father was a Gujarati, while his mother was a Uyghur woman who fled Kazakhstan to India during a political turmoil. It is said that Jackie’s father was a big businessman of his time but he suffered huge losses in the stock market and hence he became bankrupt. Jackie grew up in a cramped chawl in Mumbai’s ‘Teen Batti’ area, where poverty and struggle were a daily story. The financial condition of the family was so bad that Jackie left studies after 11th class. Jackie, whose life was spent in chawl for 33 years, even after giving many hit films.

Before becoming an actor, Jackie’s life was like an action film. He was known as the local tapori, meaning those boys of the area who used to get involved in petty bullying and fights. But these are not just rumours, Jackie himself admits that he tried many types of things. Worked as an apprentice chef at Taj Hotel, where he learned cooking. Then worked in a travel agency, where the job was to transport tourists. But the real twist of life was waiting further. There is also an untold story that when Jackie was only 10 years old, his elder brother died. Brother was a laborer in Century Mills and had to save a friend.

Now let’s come to the moment which changed Jackie’s life. One afternoon, Jackie was standing at a bus stand in Mumbai. Then the accountant of an advertising agency noticed him. Her tall stature and rough look impressed the man, and he offered Jackie a modeling job. This was the opportunity Jackie was waiting for. With the money earned from modeling, she joined an acting course, and soon started getting small roles. His first film was Dev Anand’s ‘Swami Dada’ (1982), where he was offered the second lead role, but ultimately got a small part. But his real breakout came in 1983, when director Subhash Ghai gave him the lead role in ‘Hero’. This film became a superhit, and Jackie became a star overnight. The interesting thing is that it was Subhash Ghai who named him ‘Jackie’, which became his screen name. Even after giving hits, Jackie continued to live in Chawl because his roots were there.

Chawl after 33 years, got a luxurious house again

Jackie’s film ‘Hero’ was released in 1983 and she became a superstar overnight. People line up to see him, start waiting outside his house. He himself told in many interviews that he lived in the chawl for a total of 33 years. There was only one small room in the chawl, where everyone lived together. There were only three washrooms for 30 people. But later Jackie took a rented house in Carter Road, Mumbai. After this, while climbing the stairs of success, he bought his first house, an eight-room house on Khar Road, Mumbai. Whose value today is Rs 31,000 crore. But he also believes that after leaving the chawl, there was distance in the family because everyone used to live together in the chawl and after shifting to a bigger house, everyone got their own rooms and everyone had their own privacy.

When Jackie saw Ayesha for the first time, she was a 14-15 year old school girl. Both of them met in the bus, when Ayesha got down from the bus, Jackie wanted to talk to her. In those days Jackie was only 17 years old. Both of them became friends and fell in love. But the biggest wall was his family status. While Ayesha was from a rich family, Jackie was from a chawl. But both of them did not give up. After becoming an actor, Jackie married Ayesha in the year 1987 and both of them started living in a chawl with a joint family. In 1990, Ayesha and Jackie became parents for the first time, Tiger Shroff was born to them. Jackie’s younger daughter Krishna Shroff was born in the year 1993.

Ayesha made a black comedy film ‘Boom’ in which Katrina Kaif, Amitabh Bachchan, Gulshan Grover and Jackie herself were in lead roles. But this film flopped badly at the box office and Jackie incurred huge debt. The actor even had to sell his house. Somehow Jackie and Ayesha paid off the loan. Meanwhile, Jackie’s parents passed away and he was devastated. Jackie had told in an interview that after the death of his father, he had to go for shooting the next day.
