For today’s Gen Z, the smartphone is not just a device but has become a part of the lifestyle. It has become a common habit to check notifications as soon as you wake up in the morning and keep scrolling the screen till night. But continuous screen time tires the brain, reduces focus and also affects sleep.
In such a situation, it becomes very important to do Digital Detox i.e. distance from phone and social media for some time. If you are having trouble keeping distance from the phone, then you can follow some easy tips.
Why should you do a digital detox?
The mind does not get rest by continuously looking at the screen. This affects sleep. Additionally, focus is reduced and irritability may increase. Comparisons and updates on social media also increase mental pressure. Digital detox gives peace to the mind, frees up time for relationships and gives an opportunity to focus on yourself.
When to do digital detox?
- When you feel that living without your phone is becoming difficult.
- You are not sleeping properly.
- Not concentrating on work.
- You have become habituated to seeing notifications again and again.
- The mind feels restless or stressed.
How to do?
- Keep a time for at least 1-2 hours a day when you do not use phone, TV, laptop at all. Start as soon as you wake up in the morning and 1 hour before sleeping.
- Turn off notifications of unnecessary apps. Repeated pings distract attention and increase the habit of checking the screen.
- Set an app timer. Decide in advance how much time a day you will use social media and stick to it.
- Reading a book, walking, yoga, listening to music, cooking or talking to family – all these relax the mind.
- Do not keep the phone near while sleeping. Use a separate clock for alarm so that the habit of looking at screens at night is reduced.
- Keep a “digital fast” for one day or half a day a week. During this time, spend time with nature, friends or hobbies.
- Instead of checking your inbox all the time, check messages and emails only in 2–3 fixed slots.
Digital detox is not a punishment, but a way to give yourself mental peace. With a little effort you can regain control over both your time and mind.
