Customers of Lloyds, Halifax, Santander and NatWest face losing more bank branches from UK high streets this year as 61 locations are earmarked for closure.

Lloyds Banking Group, which incorporates Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, accounts for 37 of these impending closures, with the significant reduction in its branch network coming in response to the growing demand for digital banking. A total of 218 branches were closed by the group in 2025 following a reported 55% drop in in-person transactions over the past five years, including 142 Lloyds branches, 118 Halifax branches and 43 Bank of Scotland branches.

The closures are part of the group's plan to cut costs and digitise services as more customers make the move to digital apps to manage their money, marking a significant shift from in-person banking towards mobile and online services.

Similarly, Santander is also significantly reducing its branch network with 18 closures currently planned for 20206. These come after the bank closed 95 of its branches in 2025 and cut services at others.

In response to changing banking habits, Santander has also reduced its opening hours at 36 of its sites, while 18 have been made 'counter free' to create "more space and time" for branch teams to help customers.

Elsewhere, NatWest has confirmed seven more of its bank branches are due to close as demand for mobile and online services increases. The major bank closed 49 of its locations across the UK in 2025 and more will follow this year as in-person banking continues to decline.

NatWest said customers will be given 12 weeks notice of a branch closure announcement and will be advised of the exact closing date through a poster displayed in branch, or via a closure guide available in branch or online.

The closures in 2026 come after 432 branches shut their doors for good across the UK last year as more services become digitised. According to analysis from Which?, these included 105 from NatWest, 101 from Halifax, 95 from Santander, 93 from Lloyds, 24 from the Bank of Scotland, eight from TSB and six from Barclays.

But there is some good news for customers of Nationwide and HSBC, with neither brand closing any branches this year. Nationwide has made a pledge to keep all 605 of its branches open on UK high streets until at least the start of 2030, giving customers the freedom to choose how to bank, whether that's in branch, in the app, or over the phone.

Meanwhile, HSBC has reaffirmed its commitment to customers by extending its branch promise this year, guaranteeing that all 327 branches will remain open until at least 2027.
