Man Utd handed transfer update as forgotten England star 'agrees' Premier League move

Former Manchester United midfielder Angel Gomes looks to have secured a Premier League comeback during the January transfer window. The England international left Old Trafford for French side Lille in 2020 before moving to Marseille on a free transfer last summer.

The 25-year-old made an impressive start to this season but has featured for merely eight minutes of Ligue 1 action throughout December and January. Predictably, transfer speculation around Gomes emerged with a late winter window move now on the way.

According to reports, Wolves have now reached an agreement in principle for the midfielder on loan until the season's end. He has reported that a €1million (£866,000) fee will be paid for the remaining months with a purchase option worth approximately €7m (£6m).

Whether that clause gets triggered may hinge on various factors including Wolves' anticipated relegation. Molineux staging Championship football next term appears likely as they sit 17 points from safety.

Joao Gomes' future is also probably influencing this transaction with the Brazilian midfielder tipped to depart in the summer. He allegedly surfaced as a target for United with connections to Atletico Madrid and Napoli also materialising.

The academy graduate Gomes was heavily tipped to make a remarkable return during summer 2024, with the player himself having previously discussed such a possibility.

Speaking to L'Equipe back in November 2022, he acknowledged: "Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it's home.

"I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."

Despite his forthcoming transfer to Wolves, Gomes could yet return to United given the need for reinforcements in his preferred role at Old Trafford, with no certainty the purchase option in his Wolves deal will be triggered.

Casemiro's departure has been confirmed at the conclusion of his contract, which would create a vacancy in the club's strongest starting XI. Manuel Ugarte represents another alternative but has struggled to secure regular football during his spell at the club.

Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba have all been touted for substantial transfers to United in recent months.

An approach to Brighton was lodged for the latter during the closing stages of the summer window, though the Seagulls' nine-figure valuation prompted United to withdraw. Speculation emerged about a fresh bid whilst Baleba was competing at AFCON, but Brighton chief executive Paul Barber swiftly refuted that.

"No call from Old Trafford," he told talkSPORT in early January. "No call from anyone connected to Manchester United. We have no plans or desire to sell Carlos in this window, or in any future window, but we know he's a talented player and he's got a lot of options ahead of him in the future".

"For us right now, he's an important player in the second half of the season and we're looking forward to getting him back from AFCON."
