Portsmouth have confirmed that a fan died outside of Fratton Park before their win over West Brom on Saturday afternoon.

The incident happened outside the stadium with emergency services being called, but they were unable to save the individual. The Championship club said in a statement: " Portsmouth Football Club are devastated to announce that a Pompey fan has passed away following a medical emergency at Fratton Park on Saturday afternoon.

"The incident happened just outside the stadium before the game and despite the efforts of emergency services, they tragically died. The next of kin have been informed and our deepest condolences go out to the supporter’s family and loved ones.

"We are grateful for the efforts of South Central Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance, as well as club staff and stewards, who worked valiantly to try to save the supporter’s life."

West Brom said on social media: "We’re devastated to hear this tragic news. The thoughts of all us at the Albion are with the supporter’s friends, family and loved ones at this desperately sad time." Fans from across the footballing landscape also continued to pay their respects.

Portsmouth went on to claim the three points, which lifts them above the Baggies as their struggles continue despite a recent change in the dugout. Conor Chaplin and Ebou Adams were among the goals on the south coast, but the game has since been overshadowed by the tragedy.

The news comes just one year after Pompey fan Alec Lumb sadly lost his life at Fratton Park during their clash against Middlesbrough. The game was stopped just three seconds after the start due to the incident.

Portsmouth players immediately alerted the referee, calling for help from their physios when they saw that a spectator had fallen ill. One medic was seen pumping the chest of the spectator.

Medical staff continued to try and save the individual as stewards shielded the incident in the north stand with white sheets, but later in the evening Portsmouth confirmed that the fan had passed away.
