The Loose Women panel are seldom left speechless, but that was the case today. Janet Street-Porter revealed on the show that she has wed her long-term partner Peter Spanton. The renowned broadcaster, 79, who has been married four times before, has been with Peter, 70, since 1999. She sent a video message to her Loose Women colleagues on Monday to announce they had finally said their vows.
In the video, Janet, alongside her new husband and their dog Badger, announced: "Hi everyone, I've been keeping a big secret. It's my big news for everyone. Peter and me, and Badger, got married on Saturday, so there you are. I finally did it. I waited to the last for the best. See ya!" The Loose Women panel, consisting of Kaye Adams, Sue Cleaver, Brenda Edwards and Nadia Sawalha, all clapped joyfully upon watching the video clip.
Brenda shouted: "Congratulations Janet," as Kaye pointed out: "Husband number five."
Born Janet Bull, she was previously married to Tim Street-Porter from 1967-1974 and retained his surname once she embarked on her media career, although she confessed to having multiple affairs during this period. The star then tied the knot with Tony Elliott, the publisher of Time Out, before they separated two years later.
Reflecting on her instant regret after the ceremony, Janet admitted: "I turned to him and said 'well that was a mistake,' within 24 hours [of marrying] and he said 'I agree'.
"I said 'we were such great friends, exactly the same age, why on earth did we get married! ?"
Janet was subsequently married to filmmaker Frank Cvitanovich from 1979-1981. In 1997, she tied the knot with David Sorkin in Las Vegas, later labelling this as a "mistake" and a "mid-life crisis". They separated two years later in 1999.
She admitted: "I thought 'I don't know why I'm saying the words 'I do' but I'm just saying I do' then I was back in the hotel and I was like, 'ugh'."
Janet has previously spoken about her love life, telling The Guardian: "I've been married four times and lived with a lot of blokes - I know how men's minds work. What have all the men I've been with got in common? They're all pathetically grateful."
She later joked on Loose Women she had all of her engagement and wedding rings in a chest of drawers.
